Helpful Reminders
There are millions of accidents each year in the United States. If you're involved in an accident, what’s the right thing to do? Others have found the following tips helpful.
Calm down
Take a deep breath, count to 10, picture a sandy beach—whatever works for you. After all, the calmer you are, the easier it is to handle things.
Assess the situation
Was the accident a serious one? What will it take to keep yourself and others safe? Turn on your hazards and evaluate your surroundings. Is it safer in your car or do you need to get out? Does anyone need medical attention?
Do you need to call anyone?
If anyone is injured, call 911. If you feel the need, notify the police so they can create an accident report. This can be helpful to your insurance company.
Typical information to collect
•
License plate number of the other vehicle(s)
•
Names and phone numbers of those involved in the accident
•
The other driver's insurance information
•
The name of the other car's owner (if the driver isn't the owner)
•
A description of the other car(s) involved (make, model, year, color)
•
Names, addresses and phone numbers of any witnesses to the accident
If the police are called and a police report is written it will often include a lot of the above information and you can simply ask for a copy of the report.
Photograph the accident
If you can, take pictures with a camera or cellphone. Try to show the “big picture” of the accident so you can share it with your insurance company.
Pictures of the traffic controls, street names, road conditions and the damaged vehicles (these can include close-up shots if possible) can also be helpful.
Contacting your insurance company
If you're reporting the collision to your insurance company, don’t put off calling them. It’s also worth knowing ahead of time what your policy covers so you don’t have any surprises, such as not having coverage for the cost of towing, glass or a rental car.
Requirements and legal obligations are unique to each insurance company and state.
Drivers are responsible for knowing and adhering to the appropriate laws and/or requirements.
